Product Review: Skanunu Bearing Cleaner & Lube
It’s taken me quite a while to get around to reviewing this product due to my busy schedule, and honestly I wish I could have filmed my test, but at the time I tried it out I did not have a functioning camera.
First of all, Skanunu is a local company based out of Kennesaw, GA and I’m all about supporting local companies, so this was a product I was anxious to try out. I wanted to really put this stuff to the test, so I dug out an old pair of Bones Swiss bearing that I had ridden for no less than 2+ years without the shields on them. Prior to using Skanunu on them, the wheels I had put them in would barely spin an entire revolution when spinning the wheel by hand. So in my opinion these bearings were toast and had been retired.
The directions on the bottle say to just apply the product to the bearing while in the wheel, give it a few spins, and wipe off the excess.I imagine this would work just fine to lube them, but I’ve never cleaned bearing in this manner, so I will admit that I did not follow the instructions. Had I just followed just those directions, I don’t think my results would have turned out nearly as good in my particular case.
The first thing I noticed about Skanunu was the smell. It has almost a sweet smell to it. It actually smells like it may not taste too bad, but I definitely don’t recommend drinking the stuff, and neither does the caution label on the bottle.
So, on with the testing… I took the 8 Bones Swiss bearings(As I mentioned the shields were not on the bearings) and placed them in a small plastic container with a lid and added about 1/4 bottle of Skanunu to the container. I vigorously shook the container for about 2 or 3 minutes. The liquid in the container was completely black with dirt, and whatever else had accumulated on them while skating without the shields on them for years. I drained out the black liquid, and in my case since these bearings were in such bad shape, I repeated this process two more times until the liquid was nearly close to it’s original golden color. I wiped off the excess product with the handy shop rag they included when they sent the product to me.
One I was finished I threw the bearings back into a pair of wheels, and lo and behold the wheels were spinning freely and certainly had some renewed life to them. They were by no means spinning like a fresh set of Bones Swiss, but definitely usable once again. In fact, after this test I gave that set of bearings to a friend and he’s still riding them to this day, which is 5 or 6 months after I’d cleaned them with Skanunu.
Overall I would say this is a quality product from right here in Georgia and I would definitely recommend it to others.
